Game of the Week: Munchkin

The backstabbing dungeon crawling monster killing card game, Munchkin is a quick game that is a parody of DnD. The goal of the game is to get to level 10 while keeping your “party” from doing the same. You level by killing monsters while gaining their loot. Sounds prety normal until your gender changing half dwarf attacks some sort of cube thingy. Its fun and you will play. MWHAHAHAHA!
Average Game Time: 15- 30 minutes

Players: 3 to 6

Edit: Our Gaming Chair forgets that each of the incarnations of Munchkin are compatible and have expansions, allowing for even bigger, stranger genre-bending games. In this spirit, there will be two Epic Games of Munchkin this week, Wednesday at 2 and Friday around 4. Come, Kill the monsters, take their stuff, stab your buddy in space, in a kimono, as a third-vampire third-bug third-elf mystic/warrior with flight and the Unnatural Axe in one hand and the Naginata of Increasing Skill in your other two, thanks to your Monkey Kung Fu, all the way to level 20! These games typically last quite a bit longer, as they allow for groups of well past 6 players and can take a long time, increasing game times out to 2, 3 or more hours, depending on how crazy things get. So, if that spikes your interest, come, play, win! If you just want to get your feet wet, I can do that as well and have a fairly “normal” game of Munchkin as well, using one box of your choice from those I have and will be bringing, whether it’s the original, Munchkin Bites (based off of World of Darkness), Munchkin Fu (derived from Hong Kong films and other martial arts paraphanalia), Star Munchkin (for the Scifi-geek, whether a Trekkie, devoted Jedi or otherwise) or Super Munchkin (giving Marvel and DC a run for their money). So come, play, have fun. Hope to see you there!

Game of the Week: Double Edition

Yeah… Yeah… I know I missed last week. But that means more for you oh lucky MAGE peeps.

So then First up is ZIGZAG!

This is an awsome mix of connect four and chess. Obscenely simply to learn and quite fun. Basically the idea is to connect your four little peices of the board. However, to do so you can only move down your own lines, which is where the fun starts as your opponent will be working to block your ability to do so while trying to win themselves. MAGE has a copy of this game so feel free to play.
Average Play Time: 10 minutes to 30 minutes

Players: 2

Now for the game from this week! SETTLERS OF CATAN

One of the greatest strategy games of the last 50 years, settlers is a highly strategic game played on a modular board where players strive against each other while creating their own civilization. Ironically, while you can’t attack in the game, it is still highly competive where deals between players for resources and tempory alliances are normal.

All in all the game is simply great fun. MAGE owns a copy of this game so feel free to play the game.

Average Play Time: 30 minutes to 1.5 hours
Players: 3-4

Game of the Week: Betrayl at the House on the Hill

betraly Betrayl

Like fright? Feel the need to control hordes of zombies or kill dracula? Want to send a house into the very pits of hell? Want to kill everyone else on the board or take down the one who betrays you? Then Betrayl at the House on the Hill is the game for you! The game that is never the same twice uses a randomly generated mansion and dice to determine which of over 50 different senarios that you will go through. Each senario is crafted to be a different experiance using many different rules and peices through the game to increase enjoyment. Picture below is the two books used primarily in the game, each one contains all 50 senarios, but each book focuses on only 1/2 of the story. Thus the betrayer may control a horde of ghosts, but the players will be given clues on how to defeat them!

Personally I have played the game about 15 times and I have yet to play the same game twice. I found it extermely fun, but it is rules heavy. Fully reading the manual and the FAQ is desired and even then it is hard to remember every small rule. Yet it is a very fun game to play and well worth the effort.

Average Play Time: 45 minutes to 2 hours

Players: 3 to 6.

Game of the Week: Tsuro

A fast paced game of survival, Tsuro challanges you to survive (and kill) in a game of chance and wits as you create you own path to eternity. The game itself is pretty fun and can offer quick enjoyment as the games tend to be rather short. The main idea behind the game is that you create paths by laying down tiles on the board. As you progress through the game the tiles begin to fill more and more of the board, increasing the chances of you creating a path to your own death or the death of others. MAGE has a copy of Tsuro in the innner office. So feel free to enjoy a turn at playing the game.

Average Play Time: 15 to 30 minutes

Number of Players: 3-8
